Regular Expressions For…..?

Regular Expressions, or regex, is a text pattern matching utility with lots of fun, formal semantic rules. You can find regex packages embedded in most language development kits, and it is ubiquitous in *nix and shell environments. I’m a software dev by trade, and therefore use regex on a daily basis for text extractions from structured and unstructured data, but I’d imagine that this potentially has myriad uses (if it’s not already a scripting component of existing text mining tools) in the digital humanities world.

Jentery, after chatting with you, I’m intrigued about the possibilities of conveying or employing not only social networking techniques but also multimodal literacy through conventional, in -class, f2f and pencil and paper pedagogical methods. Sometimes the theory and concepts don’t register when students actually get to start doing right away. They see the digital trees but not the forest.

Johanna Drucker Visits the UW

We are pleased to announce that, during the evening of Friday, October 22nd—just one day prior to THATCamp PNW—Johanna Drucker (Martin and Bernard Breslauer Professor of Information Studies at UCLA) will be giving a talk at the Henry Art Gallery on the University of Washington’s Seattle campus.

Her talk is titled, “The Art of Designing Interpretation in Digital Environments.” Here’s a brief description of what to expect:

Humanists are deeply involved in interpretation, and the conventions of print environments embody approaches to scholarly work that emerged from interpretative activity. What should be considered when approaching the design of digital environments for interpretative work? How will these support some of the crucial features of traditional humanistic work at the same time as engaging with the capacities of digital environments (social networking, real time refresh, extensible reference fields, etc.)? This talk lays out some parameters and questions for thinking about design for humanist interpretation.

THATCamp PNW 2010 Call for Participants

(The Humanities and Technology Camp Pacific Northwest)

Deadline for applications is Monday, June 7^th, 2010.

Following successful regional events around the world, including the first annual THATCamp Pacific Northwest at Washington State University in 2009, the Simpson Center for the Humanities, the University of Washington Libraries, and the Henry Art Gallery are pleased to announce the return of THATCamp PNW in 2010.

The second annual THATCamp PNW will occur on Saturday, October 23^rd and Sunday, October 24^th, on the University of Washington’s Seattle campus.

On Friday, October 22^nd, THATCamp PNW will be preceded by two exciting public events:

An workshop facilitated by Dave Lester, Assistant Director at the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH), on web-based publishing and digital curation, and
A talk by Johanna Drucker, book artist, visual theorist, and Martin and Bernard Breslauer Professor of Information Studies at UCLA.

“The Humanities and Technology Camp”—or THATCamp—is a user-generated “unconference” in the digital humanities. Instead of being constructed around a specific theme or discipline, the program is based on attendee interests and is agreed upon at the beginning of the event. An unconference relies heavily on interaction and face-to-face conversations. THATCamp participants present their work, share their knowledge, and actively collaborate with fellow participants.

THATCamp is open to anyone with an interest in the digital humanities: faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students, teachers, librarians, archivists, museum professionals, university staff and administrators, educational technologists, designers, developers, hackers, public historians, artists, writers, and more.

During THATCamp PNW, sessions will likely range from discussions of current issues in digital scholarship, pedagogy, and curation to software demos, training sessions, and lightning talks. In other words, participants are neither expected nor encouraged to present formally arranged talks, papers, or panels.

For this particular THATCamp, we especially encourage participants to facilitate sessions on content management systems or platforms (e.g., Drupal) and their role in collaborative humanities scholarship.

Prior to the event, participants will be invited to contribute to the THATCamp PNW blog and share their ideas for potential THATCamp conversations. Once at the event, they will collectively agree on the sessions where those conversations will take place. One added benefit of the unconference is that participants will meet people with investments similar to their own and can organize joint sessions accordingly.

Unfortunately, there is only space for approximately 80 participants at THATCamp PNW. To apply, please complete the application by telling us a little about yourself, your interests in the digital humanities, and your expectations for THATCamp PNW. There’s no need to write extensively: brief answers for each section will suffice, and the details can unfold at the event itself.

Note: there are no application or registration fees for THATCamp.

Announcing PNW 2010

We’re very pleased to announce that the University of Washington in Seattle (UW) will be the site for the second annual THATCamp PNW on October 23-24 2010! The event will be sponsored by the Simpson Center for the Humanities at the UW. We’re looking forward to continuing the discussions that began at WSU last fall, and to starting new conversations as well.

If you were a participant at the first THATCamp PNW, we hope you’ll consider applying to attend this fall; and if you’re just discovering THATCamp, and have an interest in digital humanities, then we really hope you’ll bring your ideas and join us.

We’ll be accepting applications soon, likely by March. Though we’re hoping to accommodate as many people as we can, space will be limited. Check back soon for more information and other exciting announcements as the application period approaches.
